Orange Elderly Services, Inc. (OES) is a non-profit community based organization. OES manages the Orange Senior Citizens Community Center, Orange Meals on Wheels, the North Orange Senior Center, and co-sponsors Orange Senior Housing, Inc. OES has a 18 volunteer member Board of Directors who donate their time to benefit the seniors.

Funding comes from the City of Orange, United Way, participants' special events and OES' fund-raising campaign. OES raises the additional funds needed to provide seniors with all the services they need to help keep them healthy and free to enjoy their later years. About 50% of the seniors in our community survive on a little over $640.00 a month. These are the people OES is serving each day.

In all the OES Programs the estimate is over 400 people are seen daily and about 5,000 different people annually. As the older population increases, additional resources will have to be found to provide a reasonable level of services. That is why OES is vigorously developing an "Endowment Program" with the goal of a million dollars in perpetual funds by the year 2006. You can bequeath your estate, car, or money to OES - if you have no relatives to pass them on to - or perhaps put a $1,000 leaf on our Endowment Tree in your family's name. Contact Keith Regan, Executive Director of OES, regarding this wonderful way that you can help seniors live out their life in dignity with the help of your perpetual gift. OES is an IRS 501(c)(3) Corporation. All gifts are tax deductible.

Focal Point

A measure of the strength of any civilization is the degree to which its elders are respected, supported and cared for. A senior center is a community focal point where older persons, as individuals, or in groups, come together for activities and services which enhance dignity, support independence, and involve them in and with the community.

Services are available through various programs and contact points throughout the community.

The Downtown and North Orange Senior Centers provide activities for anyone over the age of 60 years (55 years for some programs). There are donations requested for some activities, but no membership fees. Individuals may participate in any, or all, activities.

Home Services:

Meals are provided utilizing volunteer drivers each weekday for 75 to 85 homebound participants living in the city of Orange who, due to temporary or permanent disabilities, are unable to comfortably prepare their own meals.

Services will consist of delivering breakfast, main entree which can be heated at any time, cold supper, milk and juices. All meals are prepared under the supervision of a licensed dietician to provide for the nutritional needs of persons over 60 years of age.

There is always a need for more volunteer drivers for this program. Usually a volunteer drives one day per week and delivers to a route of eight to ten participants. Meals are ready for pickup at 10:45 a.m. and most drivers are finished by noon.

Support Groups
Contact: Gretchen Snyder
(714) 538-9633

Support groups allow people to come together with a trained facilitator and share experiences dealing with a problem. Orange Elderly Services offers six support groups: Alzheimer's Disease caregivers; Parkinson's Disease caregivers and victims; Arthritis and Diebetes victims; recently bereaved widows and widowers; and Enriching Your Relationship Support Group.

The Alzheimer's Disease group is for persons who live with or are close to a person with the disease. Group sessions explore feelings about what is happening to the victim, and share strategies in coping with the victim's behavior.

The Parkinson's group is for learning more about the disease and its effects, and for developing coping strategies for the patient and the caregivers.

At the Widow-Widower group the nature of loss is explored with participants sharing strategies that have worked in developing a new and more independent life style.

The Arthritis Club includes a support group where participants share experience, lectures by health professionals on the malady, and regularly scheduled exercise classes.

The Diabetes Support group offers a supportive atmosphere where frustrations, coping skills and helping tips can be shared, and also provides continuing education through knowledgeable guest speakers.
